How it works

A passive humidifier — foam, crystals, beads — releases moisture only as fast as the surrounding air will take it. It has no way to work harder when the door has been open, when winter drops the ambient humidity, or when fresh cedar is still pulling moisture out of the air. A cabinet's built-in system has the same limitation at a smaller scale. An active system instead reads the humidity, compares it against your set point and answers with evaporation and fan pressure, which is what makes a room-sized volume controllable at all.

Distilled or reverse-osmosis water only. This is not a preference, and it is the single thing most likely to shorten the life of the unit if ignored.

Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water evaporates those minerals do not leave with it — they stay on the wick and in the reservoir as scale. A scaled wick stiffens and loses the open surface area it needs to evaporate freely, so output falls at the same fan speed and the unit runs longer to reach the same set point. Chlorine, chloramine and dissolved iron add odour and staining, and in a room full of cigars odour is not a small thing.

That is what drives replacement wick intervals, and why nobody can quote a fixed one: wick life is a function of water quality and run hours, not calendar months.
