Cold Weather, Explained
Standard lithium batteries must block charging below 32°F to avoid permanent cell damage. DuoHeat batteries solve this differently: when the internal temperature drops below 41°F and a charging source supplying more than 10A is connected, dual heating pads on both sides of the cell stack warm the battery, then shut off above 50°F, per Renogy. The heating draws from the charger, not from your stored energy, and the process is automatic — no switches or app required. The result is a battery that can accept a charge in air temperatures down to -22°F. Note that heating engages during charging; without a charge source connected, discharge is still limited to -4°F and above.
System Fit & Expansion
Four in parallel gives you a 12V 400Ah bank that can deliver 400A combined — ample for a 12V inverter such as the Renogy REGO 3000W 12V inverter charger with LCD display. Frequently Asked Questions
Does the self-heating drain my battery? No. Per Renogy, DuoHeat runs off the connected charging source (it needs a stable charge current above 10A), so it warms the cells with incoming power rather than stored energy.
Can I mix these with older or non-heated batteries? No. Build the bank only from identical DuoHeat 12V 100Ah batteries of similar age and state of charge. Mixing models, ages, or chemistries causes imbalance.
Can I charge from my vehicle's alternator? Yes, through a DC-DC charger with a LiFePO4 profile, sized within the 100A-per-battery limit and above the 10A minimum needed to run the heaters in cold weather.
What charger profile should I use? A lithium (LiFePO4) profile within the battery's 10V to 14.6V operating range, per Renogy. Flooded or AGM lead-acid profiles may not charge these batteries fully or correctly.
How should I store them over winter? Disconnect loads and chargers and store within -4°F to 113°F at a partial state of charge, topping up periodically per the Renogy manual.
Is it safe to install indoors or under a seat? LiFePO4 batteries do not off-gas during normal operation the way flooded lead-acid batteries do, so they are commonly installed in enclosed compartments. Follow the mounting, clearance, and temperature guidance in the Renogy manual.
