Never use tap water: minerals and chlorine foul humidifier media and can taint cedar.

Does it need plumbing or a drain?

No. The humidifiers are hand-filled with distilled water. There is no supply line, no drain and no condensate tray. The only connection you might ever add is electrical, through the rear wiring port, for a powered humidification system or the lighting option.

How often will the humidifiers need refilling?

It depends on the room, the season and how often the doors are opened. A cabinet in a humid climate opened once a week runs far longer between refills than one opened daily in a dry winter. Read the hygrometer rather than the calendar and top up when it begins to drift.
